Beryl’s Story
Beryl is the second born in her family, following her sister Annet—another Take Heart student. Later that same year, Beryl’s father passed away from acute malaria, leaving her and her siblings under the care of their mother, Judith, a widow whom Take Heart has supported for many years.
Judith worked tirelessly to provide for her daughters, but after her husband’s death, his family refused to support her because she only had girls. To survive, Judith began selling bananas, walking long distances from their village to Migori town with heavy loads on her head.
“She had to struggle by carrying bananas from the village on her head to Migori so she could sell them in order to earn a living.” – Beryl
Even with her mother’s efforts, Beryl remembers days without food, proper clothing, or basic needs. In 2009, tragedy struck again—Judith was hit by a motorcycle on her way home from selling bananas. She suffered severe injuries to her back and legs, spending eight months in the hospital. During this time, Beryl had to pause her education to help care for her mother and support their family.
A New Chapter with Take Heart Africa
Despite these challenges, Beryl’s determination and perseverance never wavered. She worked hard in primary school, even when she was sent home for unpaid school fees or missing uniforms. Her resilience paid off when she scored well on her eighth-grade exams, earning a place at Kadika Girls High School, where she completed her 12th grade.
Through the support of Take Heart Africa, Beryl was able to stay in school and focus on her future. Take Heart provided not only financial assistance but also the encouragement and mentorship she needed to keep believing in her dreams.
